Review by Christine:
Afterglow is a white hot romance set after a post apocalyptic event that’s hit the world. Not only has a virus killed off a massive portion of the population but solar flares have destroyed the world we know it taking out everything electronic. Nina who’s been holed up at her parents house since the outbreak decides enough time has passed to start the journey to her grandmother’s house to hopefully reunite with her family. Roads are cluttered and things are getting dangerous and more desperate by the day. Nina thinks a motorcycle will solve her problems except she’s never driven a bike. Creed has lost everything and even more since the virus struck. Ex military, Creed, is trained in defence and when someone breaking into his home is the last thing he needs while trying to recover from the virus. Thrown together by chance, forced to partner for survival, kept together by undeniable chemistry and love during the hardest of times.

I adored this book! Afterglow was exactly what I needed and left me wanted more of this genre and Maria Monroe writing style. I’m a huge fan of post-apocalyptic television shows and movies so it was natural to pick this novel up and the blurb had me hooked. Afterglow is the complete package: smoking hot romance with action and thrilling elements. Nina is the epitome of a strong female lead. Trained in survival skills from a young age she’s cautious but fearless all rolled into one! What a refreshing change of pace. Afterglow should be at the top of your summer reads – I wish I could give this more than 5 Stars!

Review by Susan:
This is the first book in a 7 part series and follows Talia through the highs and lows of dating in today’s world. Some of the experiences in the book are based on real life situations and make me relieved that I don’t have to be partaking in the dating scene today! Although a short book, it’s long enough to keep you interested, has some laugh out loud moments and some that are mortifying! A great start to a new series 4 Stars

Excerpt

“I’m sure it wasn’t that bad,” Anette said, barely stifling a laugh.

I shot her a long-suffering look and grabbed a can of Diet Coke out of the fridge. “It was bad. Horrific, train wreck, body-parts-flung-from-the-wreckage kind of bad.”

I nudged Zach’s legs off the coffee table as I pushed by to take my seat on the sofa. I couldn’t help a sadistic smile when he moaned. “Hey, now. Just because you had a foul date doesn’t mean you have to…”

“He chomped.”

Both Anette and Zach exchanged glances, the pair of them now fully focused on the horror show that had become my date for the evening.

“I’m sorry… he what?” Anette giggled.

“Allow me to demonstrate. You’re me.” I turned towards Zach on the sofa, my knee wedged tightly against his body. “We were at his house, sitting this close, and started making out. Everything seemed fine. Then he does this move with his hand,” I explained as I slid my hand along the side of his jaw and into the shaggy hair at the back of his head. I looked to Anette and shrugged. “Hot, right?”

“Oh yeah, I’m all tingly over here,” she conceded, crossing her arms.

“And we kiss,” I added, leaning in for the full effect. Zach stiffened, probably afraid I would actually kiss him. “He pulls back, makes this bizarre face and chomps.” I open my mouth as wide as my date had and clack my teeth together with a violent CHOMP.

I pause for a second and then throw my hands in the air as if declaring victory in the I Swear I’m Not Making This Up competition. Shock washed over their faces as I allowed the scene to sink in.

“I still don’t understand,” Zach frowned.

“That face, right there! That’s the face I think I was making… the first time.”

Anette threw her ass down on the coffee table and stared at me incredulously. “Hold on. The first time? This nutjob did this more than once?”

“You let this nutjob do this more than once?” Zach added.

I smoothed my hair out with both hands and sighed. “I didn’t want to be mean. Maybe he has a tic, or Tourette’s. At the very least, I hoped he’d had something stuck in his teeth he was trying to get out.”

“Because flossing with your face makes absolutely perfect sense. Yep.”

I rolled my eyes at her and continued retelling my night from hell. “But he kept doing it. And that’s when I realized the funny face he was making was supposed to be sexy. It was like he’d learned seduction techniques from a Looney Toons cartoon.”

Anette patted me comfortingly on the knee and returned to getting ready for work. “Well, at least you have the story to remember him by. You might have nightmares about denture-wearing zombies chasing you for the next few weeks, but whatever.”

“That wasn’t the worst part,” I intoned, unsure if I even wanted to reveal this section of my night. Maybe I should take it to the grave…

After a tragedy leaves Marcus and Chase forever changed, they need to find a way to piece their lives back together. Both of them are spiraling out of control. When Marcus gets called in to speak with Chase’s teacher his world is again turned upside down
LEXI has spent years trying to keep her past where it belongs. In the past. She moves to Oakville hoping to start over. She starts to notice problems with one of her students and calls in his father for a conference. The minute she meets Marcus an intense need to help him takes over. She will fight harder than she ever has to bring Marcus and Chase back to life.
**Can be read as a Stand Alone**

Review by Candy:

I feel I should read the rest of the series because I need to know what started in the beginning of this series even if the books are stand alone. From the beginning Kathy-Jo had me balling when the news was given from the biopsy. Taryn and Marcus were the typical couple, happy and very much in love with each other. They have the best of friends they could ever ask for and a sweet little boy. Life can change and not always with a happy ending. Taryn and Marcus are trying to get pregnant, but it’s not happening. The two decide to get checked out to see who the culprit is, this is where it takes a left turn sharply. Marcus’ swimmers are fine but Taryn on the other hand is fine in most aspects but the one that counts the most. Taryn has cervix cancer and can’t be treated for it. So the lives of Taryn, Marcus, and Chase (their 6 year old) are forever changed not to mention their friends that are more than that. Since there is no treating Taryn, they all just enjoy the time left with her until the end. Marcus has been inside himself since the love of his life has been gone and he’s been there for Chase but not the way it counts and now Chase is acting up at school. Chase’s teacher has requested to speak with Marcus and chase isn’t a big help about why. Chase does great in school so the conference with the teacher is a surprise. Lexi Bissen is Chase’s teacher that has become concerned for the boy once she knows what might be causing the behavior. When Marcus and Lexi meet there are sparks right off the bat. She wants to help and Marcus will take what he can get even if it is an outsider of the group. Lexi spends time with Chase after school and they bond and the old Chase is slowly peeking back through the dark. Kathy-Jo did an excellent job with the book. It flows and you can kinda see what’s coming (grab the tissue box). The writing is in main characters POV and this is my favorite style of writing. this way you know what each is thinking from their own perspective. There is a happy ending. A must read but do have tissue ready you will need it. You’ve been warned. 5 Stars!

HIS by Brenda Rothert

HisBlogTourBanner.jpg

Review by Christine:

His by Brenda Rothert is a spicy, suspenseful romance with just the right amount of heat and twists and turns. Quinn has spent the last 4 years living on the streets protecting her younger sister, Bethy, from the dangers of living on the streets all the while trying to hide from a darker evil. When offered a large sum of money to spend a night with a wealthy man – no strings. Quinn takes the chance to be able to feed her sister and herself for a couple of months with the cash. Andrew doesn’t take chance anymore when it comes to his relationships: paid for one-night stands are all he does. Cold and calculated with as little emotion as possible but something in Quinn perks his interest and he can’t resist offering her a long term deal but not his heart. How far will Quinn go to protect her sister? Will she risk losing herself to do so? Is Andrew as perfect as he seems or is he hiding something as well?

This book had me from the start. The blurb, the stunning cover then from chapter 1 I could not put it down. Twists and turns in this rags to riches love story between two broken people for different reasons. Watching Quinn let down her guard after years of living on the streets and letting someone in was fascinating. Andrew was the perfect alpha male; guarded but kind and a soft spot for the fighter from the streets. This book was so close to perfect except the final chapter which Brenda wrapped up the story with a neat bow and that let me down. The conclusion felt rushed and unrealistic even though it’s a fictional story. I fell in love with these characters and their journey towards happiness and even though the ending wasn’t for me the epilogue didn’t disappoint. 4.5 Stars for His by Brenda Rothert

CHAPTER EXCERPT

Prologue
September 28, 2001
Andrew

Seventeen days ago, my life caught fire.
Two planes. Two towers. Nothing will ever be the same.
The fire at Ground Zero is still burning, and somewhere inside the smoky piles of rubble is my father. Do I want them to find him? For the first week, I did. I stayed home from school every day and stared at the TV, praying I’d see them pull my dad from what’s left.
I told myself over and over that he couldn’t be gone. David Wentworth was too strong to be taken down like that. He’d show them all. My dad would come crawling out of the pile of debris, still wearing his dark suit. He’d probably pull other people out, too. My dad is like that. He does things people say are impossible.
But the second week, my mom said I had to go back to school. When I told her I wouldn’t go because I was waiting for my dad to be rescued, her shoulders fell.
“He’s gone, Andrew.”
“You don’t know that. Dad’s a fighter.”
She shook her head. “I know it’s hard for a thirteen-year-old to wrap his head around. I know. You want him to be here, and I do, too. But he’s gone. It’s just you and me now.”
I glared at her, my throat burning. How could she give up on him like that? I’d never give up on my dad. I went back to my spot in his favorite leather chair in our living room and turned up the news on TV.
But after two weeks, my school counselor came to our house to see me. He frowned and told me no one could survive for two weeks in there. Then he gave me a pamphlet titled, “It’s Okay to Cry.” I crumpled up his advice on grieving and threw it in the trash.
I wasn’t going to cry. My dad wouldn’t want that. He’d always told me a man’s true measure was his strength.
“Chin up, Andrew. You’re a Wentworth. We’re made of steel.”
Today we’re having a memorial service for him. My chin will stay up, and my back will stay straight. When I look at the family pictures of my parents and me on a long table at the funeral home and my eyes start to feel watery, I pinch my leg through the pocket of my suit pants. The burning sting in my thigh makes me angry instead of sad.
Better. Dad used to yell at people from his company sometimes, so I know he wouldn’t mind me being angry. At night, when I’m staring up at the stars me and Dad stuck on my ceiling when I was little, my stomach twists and hurts with the anger I feel for the men who killed my dad.
They murdered thousands of people. I’m not the only kid without a dad now. Everyone is scared. Nothing will ever be the same.
My mom covers her mouth with her hand, crying as one of her friends squeezes her arm and talks to her. They did that, too. They made my mom cry. My dad wouldn’t stand for that.
Since he’s gone, I have to be the strong one now. I have to take care of my mom like he would. I have to think about what dad would want for us. I have to hold on tight to my need for those men to pay for what they did to my dad.
The firefighters will eventually extinguish the smoldering fire at Ground Zero, but the fire burning inside of me will never go out.

Chapter One

October 2015

Quinn

There’s nothing good in Mauricio’s Dumpster tonight. Hard pieces of uneaten pizza crust and cold spaghetti covered in olive oil are the only edible things I’ve found so far. And it won’t get better if I dig further. So why am I still ripping open bags of trash on this cold fall evening?
Because my little sister is hungry. I can still see the hope that was shining in her huge blue eyes when I left for a food run earlier. If we’ve learned only one thing in our four years on the streets of New York City, it’s that hunger and cold are realities, but facing them at the same time is a bitch.
I climb up a pile of trash heaped at the end of the rusted Dumpster, bracing my foot on a stack of empty pizza boxes. My hair whips across my face when the chilly breeze catches it.
Fall is my least favorite season now. I loved it when I was a kid and it meant hot, spicy cider, piles of crunchy leaves to plow through, and football games to cheer at.
But now, fall means the dreaded, bitter winter is on its way. I’ll spend my days taking Bethy from one heated public place to another in an effort to stay warm. At night, we’ll sleep underground. The cold down there isn’t life threatening, but some of the people are.
I’m so tired. It hits me all at once, and I sag against a filled plastic trash bag. Last night we got kicked out of the park and chased by a group of frat boys threatening to gang rape Bethy and me. If there hadn’t been nine of them, my friend Bean and I would’ve wiped the cocky grins off their faces.
Fucking rich boys. Their sense of entitlement is staggering.
I sigh and crawl back down the trash hill. The wail of a siren approaches as I fish a plastic bag out of my pocket and stuff the cold spaghetti noodles into it.
It’s food, and Bethy won’t complain. We’ve both eaten worse to stave off hunger pangs.
I close my eyes, pushing down the wave of anger welling inside me. The fatigue won’t go away if I sleep well tonight. It’s bone-deep. I’m tired of running. Tired of feeding my sister scraps of food other people threw away. Tired of wondering if the hell I saved her from is worse than the one I brought her into.
Thinking about this will drain me. I force the thoughts away, wrap my hands around the edge of the Dumpster and swing my leg over.
Two more years. That’s what I focus on instead. In a little over two years, Bethy will turn eighteen and we can have a real life. I’ll get a job, and she’ll go back to school. We’ll stop running and looking over our shoulders constantly. We won’t go to bed hungry or cold ever again. I’ll make sure of it.
The alley is quiet. It’s just me and a chubby guy smoking a cigarette, the orange glow of its end bright in the blackness. I put my head down and stuff my hands in the pockets of my coat.
“Hey.” The man’s voice is deep and insistent. I don’t look up at him.
“Hey, I’m talkin’ to you.” This time, he grabs my upper arm. I shake myself out of his grasp and push off the ground to run away, but his arm locks around me.
“What’s your fuckin’ problem?” His warm breath smells like cigarettes and garlic, and I turn away when it hits my face.
I thrash, struggling to escape his hold. He laughs at me.
“Tough girl, huh?”
He’s bulky, and I can’t stop him from slamming my slight frame against a brick wall. The more I fight, the harder he laughs.
“Let go,” I say in a level tone. He presses my upper arms against the cold stone so hard it burns, and he laughs some more.
“You think you’re too good for me?”
I kick him in the shin, and he pulls my arms forward and then slams me against the wall again. The impact rattles my teeth and knocks the wind out of me.
And now I’m pissed.
“Please don’t hurt me,” I say in a tiny voice.
“Scared now, aren’t you?” The satisfaction in his tone sends my adrenaline racing. “You better be.”
“I’ll do whatever you want. Just…please don’t hurt me.” My voice shakes, and he relaxes his grip on me.
It takes me less than a second to knee him in the crotch and wrap my hand around the knife in my leg holster. In a move too fast for this lard-ass to see, let alone block, I pull it out and sink the blade into his gut. Underhanded—harder to block. If I wanted to kill him, I’d pull it out quickly and stab him again with the tight, quick jabs Bean taught me. But he’s not worth the trouble.
There’s resistance from his flannel and his skin, but once I get past that, it’s a smooth trip through layers of fat. My arm muscles tingle as I hold the knife in place for a few seconds.
I see the whites of his eyes get larger. His mouth drops open as he stares at me in disbelief.
“You bitch,” he mutters. I’m not gentle when I pull out my knife. He cries out and puts his hands over the wound. I quickly wipe the two sides of my blade on his shirt to clean it.
He reaches for my wrist, but I’m faster. I’ve landed a punch to his meaty face before he even realizes it’s coming.
“Want some more?” I ask, flashing the business end of my blade.
“No.” He backs up a few steps, shaking his head.
I arch my brows at him. “Who’s scared now?”
I don’t wait for an answer. Instead, I turn and head for the street, where sirens are once again wailing in the distance.
My knife tucked safely away once again, I turn my thoughts back to Bethy and Bean. It’ll be cold tonight. Much as I hate to do it, it’s time for us to head back underground.

Andrew

It’s possibly the worst sales presentation I’ve ever seen. The guy trying to sell me his software company got Strike One when he didn’t introduce himself to me. And now he’s tapping his foot on the ground like he’s about to piss his pants or something. Strike Two.
“This thing could be huge. You know what I’m saying, Mr. Wentworth?” he asks me, grinning.
“Not at all.”
His smile slides away, and he clears his throat. “Um, well…like I said, I’ve already made close to a million on it.”
“How much have you made? Precisely?”
His Adam’s apple bobs as he swallows. “Seven hundred thousand or so…sir.”
I lower my brows. “Seven hundred twenty-one thousand eleven dollars. That’s according to the paperwork your CPA prepared and forwarded to me at your request.”
He nods. “Sounds about right.”
“About right?” I hold back a sigh of disgust. “This is likely the biggest meeting of your life to date, and you don’t have the answer to that critical question prepared?”
“Well, I…I knew it was in the papers, so…”
“Seven hundred twenty-thousand is not close enough to a million to call ‘close to a million.’ Especially when you subtract your start-up expenses from that figure. Cash flow of this venture is nearly nonexistent at this point.”
He silently concedes my point. “It’s still got a lot of potential.”
I’m about to lay out the cold, hard truth when my secretary, Susan, opens the door.
“Sorry to interrupt, Mr. Wentworth, but Preston McCoy is here and he says it’s urgent.”
My stomach clenches into a knot of tension as I stand and button my suit coat.
“Go ahead,” the nameless man offers, sitting down on the leather sofa in my office. “I’ll hang out here.”
His suggestion that I’m going to step out of my own office while he “hangs out” here is Strike Three.
“Thank you for your time,” I say, heading for the door.
“Oh.” His expression is crestfallen. “We’re done, then?”
“We’re done.”
He stacks his poster boards in a pile and packs his laptop into its canvas bag covered with buttons advocating marijuana legalization.
“So…when will you know?” he asks.
I meet the gaze of one of my vice presidents, Carla, and I can tell she’s holding back a smile.
“I’m not interested in purchasing your company,” I say, spelling it out.
“Really?”
Susan puts a hand on his shoulder and steers him from my office before I blow.
“How the hell did he get this meeting?” I ask Carla.
“His mother is a friend of your mother.”
I just stare at her for a second. “My mother set this up?”
“Well…she asked if you’d donate to the hospital league banquet, and then she told Susan she’d accept an hour of your time in place of the monetary donation.”
My mother only accepts the word no when someone is saying, “No problem, Mrs. Wentworth.” I learned much of my tenacity from her, but I can’t have her using my time this way. I make a mental note to discuss this with her.
Preston McCoy steps into my office, his gray comb-over sparser than the last time I saw him.
“Andrew. Carla.” He shakes both our hands, and Carla steps out. Preston’s gaze stays fixed on her ass as she departs. The old perv isn’t even sly about it.
“So,” he says, sitting down in one of the leather wingback chairs in front of my desk.
I hold up a hand to stop him, walk over to my office door, and close it. Susan generally makes sure my door is closed for meetings, but she’s probably still getting rid of the pot proponent.
Preston waits for me to unbutton my jacket and sit down. I meet his gaze, not letting on that my stomach is churning, ready to spill its contents. I know why he’s here. He has the answer I’ve been waiting seven long months for.
“The paternity test results are in, and you are in no way related to Ms. Henley’s child.”
My insides liquefy with relief. Thank fuck. I press my sweating palms to my thighs and wait for Preston to continue.
“Ms. Henley has dropped her claim for child support. It’s over, Andrew.”
I nod. “Good. Thank you for coming by with the news.”
“Of course. I can file a claim for the ten thousand a month you provided as support during the pregnancy.”
I can still see Amber Henley’s quaking lower lip when she told me in my kitchen that our one and only sexual encounter had gotten her pregnant, and there was no doubt I was the father of the baby she was carrying. The bottom of my world fell out that day. At age twenty-eight, I was just hitting my stride with my company. Not to mention she wasn’t someone I saw myself with long-term.
I’d royally fucked that kid over before it was even born. Wasn’t in love with its mother and wasn’t ready to be a father. I’d spent a lot of the past seven months loathing myself over it.
And after all that, Amber had been lying. I can’t even be angry about it because the relief overpowers everything else.
“I don’t care about the money,” I tell Preston. “Like you said, it’s over.”
He arches his brows in a judgmental glare. “Well, maybe this’ll be a lesson to you.”
“I’m not paying you a thousand an hour for life lessons,” I say, my tone crisp. “Now if you’ll excuse me.”
“Of course. I apologize.” He gets up and leaves my office, closing the door behind him.
I turn my desk chair toward the window and look out at the expanse of stone on the building next door.
It’s over. I didn’t wrong my unborn child. I don’t have to deal with gold-digging Amber anymore. If I ever cried, I’d weep with relief right now.
Instead, I sigh deeply and run a hand over the light five-o’clock shadow coating my cheeks.
Never again will I cede control of my life to a woman this way. I won’t give Preston the satisfaction of admitting this was a lesson to me. From now on, I hold all the cards.

Tell Me A Story by Tamara Lush

FB-ad-1.jpg

Synopsis:

Emma, a free-spirited bookstore owner in Orlando, keeps her business afloat with innovative ideas. Her most popular evening event is Story Brothel, where customers can pay writers to read aloud to them in a story-time for two, complete with cocktails. Despite the name, the event is usually tame.

But things take a steamy turn when a handsome, urbane businessman hires Emma for a session in a private cabana. Daringly, she shares with him a reading of her erotica. Soon both of them are feeling the effects … and Emma’s wondering what kind of lover is underneath his expensive suit.

Caleb may be a billionaire real estate mogul, but he’s never been captivated by a woman as he is by the lovely, quirky Emma. Her rockabilly vintage dresses make him long to strip them off and do very wicked things to her. And her refusal to share her personal life only makes him more curious.

Soon the couple are spending every available moment together. But Emma’s building is in danger of being razed out from under her bookstore … and worse, Caleb may be behind her problems. Can she trust him with her life as she does with her body? Or will the prickly walls built during her harsh past keep them apart?

**This is a stand-alone novella. But Caleb and Emma’s journey will continue in the summer of 2016…**

Review by Claudia:

Emma is an independent business owner who is struggling to keep her book store afloat. Caleb is a billionaire mogul who walks into her life. Yes, it sounds like many other books, but believe me when i say that it’s everything but your average billionaire story. “I wanted him the second I looked into his steel-blue eyes.” It was insta-lust for Emma and Caleb. Ms. Lush spun a sizzling, flawless, short novella. The connections with the characters is immediate and by the end it made me want to know whats in store for them. With what I assume is a HFN ending, Ms Lush leaves us with the need to continue with the next episode of The Story Series. 5 Stars!

All I ever wanted was to be a female fighter.

It was in my blood to smack people around.

Some girls wore pink dresses and makeup, I wore sneakers and bruises.

I was a loner, stuck to myself because I was different, until Camden Steel moved next door.

I punched him in the mouth, and he saw me through rose colored glasses from that day on.

I had everything I ever wanted.

The boy next door, inspiring career… until I didn’t.

He hates me. I deserve that.

They say you have to fight for what you want… What they don’t tell you… is it’ll cost you more than you’re willing to give to reach the top.

Excerpt

Climbing off the bed I grab her by the ankle, jerking her to the edge of the bed roughly.

She jumps awake panicked. Her wild, frantic eyes finding mine.

“Camden, what the fuck?”

“I thought I made it clear I didn’t want you to move, I wanted you to sleep on me.” My voice hard and accusing, all the feelings I felt that morning after she left when I was eighteen surfacing. She jerks her foot, but I tighten my hold. “I wasn’t joking.”

Bending down I grab her by the hips and throw her naked body over my shoulder.

“What are you doing? Have you lost your mind?”

“I have, and it’s because I fell for the little girl next door when I was a fucking kid,” I bark.

Yanking the curtains to the floor to ceiling window open I set her down, her back facing me.

“Put your hands on the window,” I instruct harshly.

She obeys surprisingly, and looks over her shoulder. “What are you doing?”

“Fucking you.”

Spreading her ass cheeks I push the head of my dick into her quickly, needing to feel her now. She takes in a sharp breath, her fingers tensing against the glass as I shove into her with so much force her head bangs against the window.

My chest rising and falling rapidly, I caress the shell of her ear with my lips.

“I know what you’re thinking.”

Her forehead pressed against the window she turns it, looking me in the eye.

“What?”

“That I’m possessive, controlling, crazy.” I thrust into her hard and her mouth parts with pleasure. “You made me this way, you made me the crazy man that wants to love you.”

Pressing my back onto hers, I interlock our fingers on the window, my face in the crook of her neck.

“Let me love you, let me be the crazy motherfucker that loves you.”

She nods, her breath fogging the glass as I continue to thrust into her.

Cleat Catcher (The Cleat Chaser Duet #2) by Celia Aaron & Sloane Howell

goodreads-badge.png

Review by Christine:
Cleat Catcher is follow up to Cleat Chaser released earlier this year. Cleat Catcher is the story of Nikki & Braden whom we met in Cleat Chaser. Nikki Graves loves baseball almost as much as ball players but when she met Braden Bradford veteran catcher for the Ravens she’s finally met her match in the foul mouth ball player. Braden can’t get enough of Nikki but winning over her parents and trying to balance his season is throwing him a curve ball. Every ball player has a slump but can Nikki and Braden overcome to win their pennant?

I loved Cleat Chaser to me it was the Pucked of baseball romances. Cleat Catcher fell short for me I’m sad to say. For me it lost the spark that “Chaser” had. I loved the humor in “Chaser” and in “Catcher” I found it forced and crude for crude’s sake. I understood why Braden did what he did and felt for him up against Nikki’s family and ex all the while trying to hold his career the one steady thing he’s had in his life for years. You can tell Nikki is torn between her love for Braden, family and her job but when something is questioned her claws go out. Like I said I loved Cleat Chaser and if you did too reading Cleat Catcher should be on your TBR. 3 Stars for Cleat Catcher by Celia Aaron & Sloane Howell

AP new - synopsis.jpg

What happens when an unrepentant Cleat Chaser meets the player of her dreams?

Nikki Graves has a history of going through the baseball roster with an eye for talent–the kind of talent that keeps things spicy between the sheets. But, once she meets Braden Bradford, catcher for the Ravens, her talent scout days are done. He’s the one.

Braden has never met a woman like Nikki, and he can’t get enough of her smart mouth and big heart. But life isn’t always as direct and certain as the connection between Braden and Nikki. When family objections and career trajectories begin to crowd the plate, will Braden be able to keep his catch of a lifetime?

AP new - excerpt.jpg

“This is so not my color.” I spun in the dressing room mirrors, all three reflecting the pink confection of a dress my mother had picked.

Over the years, the Graves had suffered plenty of hardships—when the good caviar was out of season, when that one maid failed to do proper hospital corners when she made the beds, or even that time when Kerfuffles, Mom’s prized Dandie Dinmont Terrier, destroyed my father’s autographed baseball from the ’56 World Series where Don Larsen threw a perfect game. Each time there was a setback, the Graves rallied in the only way we knew how. We shopped.

I wasn’t into it like Mom, but if buying me new clothes got her off my back about Braden—and finally gave me some breathing room—I was all for it. I couldn’t go back to the apartment, not until I knew what my course of action would be. So, a day of shopping didn’t sound so bad while I mulled things over.

“I think you look lovely in it.” My mother walked around, her critical eye examining it from every angle.

“What will I wear it to? My quinceañera?”

“I’m sure you have plenty of weddings to attend next spring. In this, you’ll outshine the bride.” She smiled.

“Yes, Mom, because my goal is always to ruin the bride’s special day by flouncing around in a sherbet-colored dress and flashing my panties at all the boys, including the groom.” I stepped down from the modeling podium and walked into my separate changing area. I didn’t mention that I had, on plenty of occasions, bagged a groomsman or two at my friends’ weddings, often using similar tactics to what I just described.

Mom gave an over-dramatic sigh. “Stop being difficult, and try on the next dress.”

“This one is the newest from the Valentino line.” The snooty shopping assistant reassured my mother that she was, for certain, buying the most expensive shit in all of Saks. “I wish I could have been at the runway show. It was faboosh, beyond transcendentine, positively luxotic.”

“Those aren’t words,” I muttered and fought the zipper on my mother’s next selection. This one wasn’t so bad. It was a sky blue sheath that fell mid-thigh and had an interesting peasant-top ruffle at the bust line.

I walked out and stood on the podium as the assistant—a man wearing more makeup than I owned—flittered about and crowed about the fit.

Mom took a swig of the complimentary champagne. “Cyrano, she looks like a barmaid.”

I smiled at myself in the mirror. “It’s my favorite one so far. Tit-tastic.” If a dress made it look like I had actual breasts that were bigger than a teacup, then I was sold.

“An excellent choice. The bodice is ahead of its time. I have a feeling peasant will be in three years from now.” Cyrano—if that was actually his name—twirled one side of his too-thick mustache and affected a lisp that screamed “flamer.” But he wasn’t fooling me. I’d seen him checking out my tits and ass while I modeled my dresses. He was straight, but likely knew that pretending to like the dick was the surest way to get commissions in a Saks dressing room.

Let’s test this theory. I smirked and headed back into the changing area. After yanking my zipper halfway down, I called, “My zipper is stuck. Cyrano, a little help?”

He pushed through the white curtain and let it fall behind him. His eyes took in my bare back and bra strap.

“I can’t quite get it.” I smiled at him in the mirror.

“Allow me, mademoiselle.” He gripped the zipper and pulled it down easily. “There we are.”

I let the dress fall to the floor and turned to face him. His gaze froze on my tits, then lowered to the lace over my pussy.

I plucked at the edge of my panties, pulling them away from my hip. Then I looked at him through my lashes. “Do you think I’d have to go without panties in that dress. Did you see a line?”

He licked his lips. “I-I think—” His voice had lowered two octaves in the space of ten seconds.

When I saw his boner at war with the front of his skinny pants, I laughed. “So busted. Quit ogling my pussy, and go entertain my mom.”

“What?” He cleared his throat and raised his voice into a nasal pitch again. “Oh, vaginas are so icky. I would never—”

“Tell it to your boner.” I crossed my arms over my chest and gave his crotch a pointed stare.

He dropped the act. “Look, I make good money this way, okay? When I played it straight, women never took my style advice. Style is my life, and this is the only way I can be around it and make money at it. Please don’t say anything.”

Guilt filtered through me, and I dropped my arms. “I’m not judging. Well, I’m not now, anyway. I was just messing with you.”

He smiled a little. “What gave me away?”

“Your roving eye.”

“I’ve been trying to work on that, but when I see a beautiful woman.” He gestured at me. “I can’t help it sometimes.”

An idea struck me like a wild pitch. “You get the inside scoop on designer clothes and what the customers come in here looking for all the time, right?”

He ran his thumbs up and down his bright pink suspenders. “Yeah. It’s kind of my job.”

“I’ll tell you what—wait, what’s your name?”

“Cyrano.”

I rolled my eyes. “No, your real name.”

His shoulders drooped. “Cyrus.”

“Okay, Cyrus. You agree to let me interview you for my magazine, and I won’t tell everyone what a true pussy-fiend you are. Sound like a deal?”

“Magazine?” He twirled his mustache.

“I work for Style and Substance.”

His eyes lit up, and he grabbed my upper arms. “Are you shitting me?”

I shook my head. “Not even a little shitting. Not so much as a shart.”

“Yes!” He nearly shouted. Then he ran his hands down my arms. “Sorry about that. It’s just, that’s my favorite fashion mag. It’s so down-to-earth but also classy beyond belief.”

His enthusiasm had my mind whirling in all different directions, but first things first.

“Good.” I plucked one of his business cards from the front pocket of his plaid shirt. “I’ll be in touch, Cyrano.”
